I just bought a 1997 pontiac bonniville 4 days ago up until today it ran pretty good then today I drove about 20 miles to my sisters on the freeway so I drove all the way there and I was on my way back on the freeway and I noticed that the water tempature gage was all the way in the red and that the car was over heating bad but it was not showing anything else

If you feel the engine wasn't overheating and the gauge was wrong, check to make sure the temp sending unit is good. It is near the thermostat mounted on the intake. Also, make sure the coolant level is full. If the engine was overheating, check the thermostat and check to make sure the radiator isn't plugging.
