First thing is to have your vehicles' computer codes read to determine what type of problem you're dealing with. Once you have the codes post them here if you need more assistance.
In the meantime,
Have the mechanic to check for vacuum leaks. He can use carb/throttle cleaner to spray (just a little) around the ends of each vacuum hose. If there is a leak the engine will idle properly for a while as it sucks in the carb/throttle cleaner.
He should also check the fuel pressure and for any loose connections at the spark plugs.
