Starting the car and was pulling the seatbelt when the seatbelt made a loud explosion sound and smelled like buring. The SRS light is now on all the time. The car was sitting still when it happened. 3 days later I was driving down the highway and the passenger side belt did the exact same thing. Now the belt does not have the proper tension. What caused it?

I know this happened in 2009, but this just happened to me last week, in 1997 E320 I was sitting in a parking lot and a big explosion in the driver side seat belt. Man, it scared the living S@#! Out of me, I seriously thought I was shot, then the gun powder smell and smoke came out of the seat belt compartment just like you described. 24 hours later while driving the passenger side exploded, luckily I did some research and new that it was coming. I opened a case with MBUSA but the denied the claim after a few days of negotiation, I told them I still love the care but the Customer service really sucks. I just hope no one else experience this ordeal because it is scary.

1997 E320 with about 180,000 miles in 09. The seat belt on the driver side exploded on my wife will taking off from a stop light.I took it to dealer and was told we hit something, but prior to that the belt was replace. Not even 20 miles later it went off again. We brought it back and exstensive test was done, thats when they said, that we hit something.I took the car there because, the side airbag recall was not done. The side airbag numbers didn't match the new ones in the recall paper work. Also, the revits looked original.I took the panel off so they could see. The tech that looked at it agreed and the told corperate. They wanted me to sign a notorized form saying I would not hold them liable for anything and they would fix it. They said the module was bad. They would not let me pay to fix it.I said, no then yes and made a copy. Then said, no again. If something were to happen after they fix it, they were not liable. My wife got hurt the first time while pregnant. The other side went off later when the two of us were in it. They would not let me know who did the recall, but I found out and called them in Dallas, tx.I, m in Beaumont, tx. The guy there talked tome at first, Then he said the district manager tooked the folder and he could not talk to me.

In refference to the seatbelt problems on the 1997 mercedes e320. The maufacture has a tag on the drivers side door post which notes, the warranty on those components are good to 3/2012. Also, there was a recall for the door airbags. Supposedly, they will go off without deploying. Mine were not replace but, was marked as so. I would like to be contact by the Lenneig and Victor Husary, maybe we can help each other to resolve this.
