Cruise control works intermittently. I can usually tell when it is about to quit working, because the speed of the van will increase slightly (surge) for a few seconds before it quits working. Once it has quit working, I have to keep pressing the set button for several minutes (sometimes as long as an hour or more) before the cruise will begin working again.

Scan for a possible fault with a speed sensor, a scan may bring up other issues with the cruise, I would start here.

The next time it occurs, use your foot to lift the brake pedal and if you are able to set the cruise control, the brake switch is out of adjustment or faulty.
