1995 Gmc Sierra Engine Light Coming On Occasionally Sometimes Just Minutes

My engine light is coming on occasionally. Sometimes just for a few minutes (not long enought to get checked) but it's getting more and more often. When this happens it shifts really hard from first to second gear, but shifts fine in all other gears. When the light goes off it shifts fine.
With this economy, I need all the help I can get! PLEASE HELP!!!

With GM and those crossover years, some of those connectors for checking codes may be hybrid. I can't check codes on those vehicles. If the check engine lite ever came on, there should be a code in memory, even if the code is no longer active. How long since tune-up? 02 sensors are part of a tune-up. Not sure if that issue would cause shifting issues?
