This issue could be due to a dirty or malfunctioning idle air control valve (IAC).
The IAC controls the engine speed while idling. It allows a specific amount of air into the engine.
Over time dirt and debris can build up inside the IAC. Which will restrict air flow, which can impact the way the engine idles. Sometimes it will not idle at all, and you will have to apply the throttle to keep the engine running.
Cleaning the IAC many times can improve the drivability issue.
