When I push the throttle to the floor the engine begins to stall and accelerate very rapidly when it reaches higher rpm the engine smooths out to normal even power. This car does actually have 698,000 miles on it and it had been neglected terribly maintenance wise. I have cleaned the mass airflow sensor and throttle body so far. I suspect that it is the fuel filter or pump. Next I plan to plug a code reader into it. Any Other ideas on whats wrong?

That is a lot of miles, I would go over the tune items, check for vacuum leaks, check for any play in the throttle butterfly and do the scan, re post with any codes you get for more assistance, start here.

I replaced the fuel filter and that solved the problem for the most part, but before it is at operating temperature it still does it. I find this interesting as it is fuel injected it has also been hard to start.

You'll need to plug in a scanner and see if any codes are stored. What's happening is one of the sensors is supplying sporadically intermittent data to the computer unt8il it warms up. Hopefully a code has been set because of it.
