I recommend replacing the thermostat with a new one. When you drive without one, often times the coolant circulates too fast which can cause the engine to not run at operating temp. It can also have the opposite effect. For example, if the coolant doesn't have enought time to cool in the radiator, the engine can run hot. Plus, the heater will not work properly. If you remove the bad one, install a new one.
