What is a pnc switch used for on a 1992 Volvo 960 and is it very hard to replace?

I was told all the car need is the pnc switch replaced, I want to price the part, I have someone to install it, I just want to know is this a major issue, she says the car won't go into gear until the PNC switch is
replaced. Can you help me?
