With intermittent issues, you have to test when problem is ongoing. If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Be careful about spraying gas all over a hot engine. Your obd1, you can check mil codes, anything?
To check for spark at the spark plugs, carry a known good spark plug or spark tester in the glove box, it won't be hot. If spark plug wire is hot, use a glove. Pull spark plug wire off spark plug, stick tester in boot, ground/touch metal part of tester to metal part of engine, engine cranking watch for spark. It's possble you have an intermittent rpm signal, hard to be sure without testing?
