When the car is failing you need to figure out what is missing, causing the car not to start, check this link to assist you: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-cranks-but-wont-start
Once we figure out what is missing that will leasd us in a direction of repair.

The mechanic drove the car until it died while it was hooked up to test equipment. The test equipment showed the car had fuel pressure but no spark

When the car is cranking and not starting is the scan tool showing rpms? If not suspect crank sensor or crank sensor wiring, if okay suspect ignition control module, have your mechanic test this(it is located under coil packs). Most of the time when I was working on these 3.8Ls with a no spark issue it usaully boiled down to either the crank sensor or ignition module.
