The location of the filter and fluid flush recommendations; fluid type and replacement volume required for service? Gear thump and no overdrive are present so a fluid flush and filter clean is my first maintenance strategy but if it doesn't work will an overhaul or reconditioning be cheaper than replacement?

We do not have any information on this vehicle so I am only replying based on my experiance with Nissan vehicles.

You need to drop the oil pan to get to the filter which most probably would be a maintenance free strainer.

For the year model transmissions, Dexron II or equivalent ATF would be sufficient. If you drop the oil pan and find too much debris within, it would be time to rebuild the trans or replace it. For pricing, you should get local quotes.
