Jus put rebuilt engine why wont it stay on?

My car starts but shuts off imeadiately I have to hold the gas for it to stay on and it smells alot like gas can anyone help

Scan for codes and check fuel pressure first

Check to see if lifters are adjusted correctly if you adjusted them.
