CAN I BUY A MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR REPLACEMENT AND JUST FIX INTO MY CAR? MECHANICS IN MY AREA ARE SUGGESTING THAT I CANT JUST BUY A REPLACEMENT AND IT WILL WORK WITH IT. THAT I NEED TO MOVE THE CAR TO THE REPLACEMENT SHOP WHERE A LOT OF THE MAF SENSORS OF MY CAR MAKE AND MODEL WILL BE TESTED TO SEE WHICH WILL WORK WITH MY CAR.

How true is this? Thank you

I'm not sure what the issue is. If the mass air flow sensor has been diagnosed as defective, you can order one for your specific application and replace it yourself. Thank you for listing the engine size. Be aware there are two different 2.2L engines. One uses a turbocharger. Most likely the mass air flow sensor is the same for both applications, but if your engine uses a MAP sensor too, that will be different. That sensor measures intake manifold vacuum, and with a turbo, the intake can go into a pressure situation. The MAP sensor has to be able to measure that too.

The main thing to watch out for when replacing the mass air flow sensor is there can't be any air leaks between it and the throttle body. If any air sneaks in that doesn't go through the sensor. It won't get measured, so no fuel will be commanded to go with it.

The problem is: the car can start, work at gear one, but it wont run well at gear two or three and above. At times, it stops completely.I just changed the fuel pump and tested it with a mechanic.

I could have changed it(MAF) myself, but our Nigerian road side mechanics have their own theories. The theory now is: I must probably test like three or four and above before I can get the one that can work with my car, even if it is the same make and specification of the one removed from it.

I was just baffled by their claim and submission. So, I need clarifications on that, pls.

What I meant was I don't know what the issue is with your mechanics. The Engine Computer will learn the characteristics of the new sensor. All you have to worry about is the sensor must be the correct part number for your car's year, model, engine size, and other options.

I don't know what you have for auto parts stores. Here in the U.S. We have Carquest, Auto Zone, Advance Auto, NAPA, and O'Reilly Auto. Those are the big ones. I found your mass air flow sensor on O'Reilly's web site for $190.00. They want your old one traded in.

The fuel pump must never have voltage with just the ignition switch turned on. If it did, that would pose a serious fire hazard if a fuel line got ruptured in a crash. You need to check for voltage to the pump while a helper is cranking the engine.
