1990 dodge intermittent high idle problem. When starting and idle it is perfect. The IDLE CONTROL MOTOR against the throttle rod SEEMS to function properly, however after a few stops in city traffic the van will idle at 25 mph. It does not want to return. On occasion it will act normal. I lubed the cables and moving mechanisms. They seem to be free and the dash trouble codes appear to be clear. They give me a 55 1st time every time. Is there a test for the idle control motor. Visually at a stop it appears to function ok. Once it jumped forward after returning all the way back. What sensors drive the settings for this device? All vacuum lines and connectors appeared ok

The idle control motor sounds bad. It is adjustable (if I recall) on a 1990. It may be over adjusted and not fully functioning when cold. The ECM controls it; however, the part is nothing more than a solenoid. It either gets power or it doesn't.

THe code you are getting, 55, is a finish code that indicates the computer has gone through all its checks. If that is the only code you get, there are no trouble codes stored in the system.

Based on your problem, I feel the idle control motor is bad.
