Older ones had one nut that held the small right angle bracket that held the cable. You loosened the nut, slid the cable back to take up the slack, then tightened the nut.
By '93, (the closest service manual I have), they were using a cable that snapped in on both ends and there was no adjustment possible. If you have that type and the cable has too much slack, something is bent.
