This thermal problem have a variety of causes. It is most likely the thermal sensor that adjusts the fuel to the engine is malfunctioning and the engine is operating under a rich condition. You don't give specific info on what "runs terrible" actually means. Black smoke from the exhaust when the engine is warm and under acceleration indicates a rich fuel mixture. More specific info would help in narrowing your problem down. Is the Check Engine light on?

A second opinion would be to run the engine at night time until it starts running rough. Check for any sparks coming from the ignition wires and distributor cap. It's not uncommon for these types of shorts to show until the vehicle is warmed up.
