My boyfriend has a 1987 chevy pickup that keeps dying. He checked all the wiring, battery, spark plugs etc. He has to jump start it to get it going and then just slowly dies. The lights get dimmer, his stereo turns off then it just dies. He changed the alternator and the belt and it is still doing the same thing. I want to be able to give him ideas of what it could be. He has been getting very frustrated with it lately and its his only means of transportation back and forth to work. Any suggestions of what it could be?

First check if the battery warning light turns on when the ignition switch is turned on. If it does, unplug the connector on the rear side of the generator and measure the voltages there when the ignition switch is off, then on. Also measure the voltage on the large wire bolted to the back of the generator. Holler back with those wire colors and voltages.
