What should I check? Heard possibly timing belt broken. Ideas?

1986 Mazda 626 driving on highway-50 mph-just died. Wouldn't start again. Had to tow it home.

If its the timing belt-remove the distributor cap and crank engine over-is the rotor turning-if not the belt is gone or the distributor drive gear
