Enter your question.I own a 1982 toyota 4 x 4 pickup. I have had to pump the gag quite a bit lately to get it started, until yesterday when it just would not start. It sounded like it wanted to, but just could not turn over. Eventually there was no power from the battery from continually attempting to start it. Is my problem with the fuel pump, or is it my alternator, or could it be something else. Thank you.

Information on your vehicle is not found in our database so I am not sure of the engine specifications and system. Being such and early model, I believe it is a carburetted model.

When engine can crank but not start, it could be fuel or ignition related.

The above link shows how to go about checking for what is missing.

Check for sparks and if present, remove the air cleaner and spray some starting fluid into the carburettor and try starting.

Check around the carburettor for signs of fuel leaks. When leakages occurs, the carburettor would be dry and that would require some cranking to get engine started.

Check the carburettor fuel cut solenoid operations. If the solenoid is not working, the throttle has to be opened for engine to be started and it would not idle.
