: "I have a 1978 Chevy Malibu with a 350 aluminium heads 270h comp cam I have replaced steering colum fuel pump carburetor distributor but it starts right up and dies immediately I can feather the gas pedal and get it to run for about 6 seconds"

Was the carb new or off another vehicle. Check fuel pump for pressure about 3.5 lbs and volume 1/2 pint 30 seconds. It may need either a new accelerator pump/float adjustment or accelerator pump adjust ment or choke plate is staying closed and not opening up.
