1970 Chevrolet Impala Backfire through Exhaust

I'm pretty sure it's just my gas/air mixture is to rich in gas, the backfires are so loud it's worse then a 12 guage. (Not even kidding). Any suggestions to lower the gas mixture? Or just to fix it in general.

pull the valve covers and check for a broken/bent pushrod or valve not opening due to a bad camshaft. also check dist cap for cracks.
