What type of gas does a 1966 chevy corvette use or need?

This was designed for leaded fuel, now as we no longer can get it, you can use a valve saver additive, check your local parts store, you can get kits to drip feed into manifold for longer protection, just use a standard octane rated fuel and you should not have a problem,

Would it be OK to put regular unleaded into it WITHOUT that drip feed into the manifold?

You can, but if you are still running with older style lead fuel valves, these will hammer out and start leaking, the lead fuel acted as cushion so to speak, as does the additives for older designed engines, new valve are stalite and so much harder, these run with out a problem.
