Rear air suspension

Recently I purchased a used 1998 Lincoln Continental, which had a prolem with the rear air suspension. I went and purchased the parts and was ready to install, when I noticed that the susension "fixed itself". What I mean is that when I got the car, the back end was very low. Somehow, after I drove the car this way for two days, the system seems to have kicked in and is now working. There error message on the console about cheking the suspension went away as well. Then I went to drive it, put the key in the ignition and the back end dropped again. Now a day later, its back up again.

I am confused. Should I go ahead and replace the air-bags, or is the problem really with the ECS. I contacted the seller, and he said the problem started when he jacked up the front of the car, without turning oiff the suspension by prerssing the switch in the trunk.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I am by no means a Lincoln pro - but my father's '94 lincoln continental air ride has been working on and off for a few years and finally blew the other day. At that point, you either have to decide to replace it with a spring strut system or replace most of the air units as you will generally have a problem with them until replaced. The comments on this site have great suggestions and ideas for either of the above. Air ride replacement can be found reasonably on and call 1-866-597-2397 if you want to swap it out in favor of spring suspension for about $650 including shipping of parts to your door. Then anyone can install or you can read instructions and do it yourself.

Usually if you do any work without turning off the system it takes a bit for it to self repair (level out and continue in a regular fashion of working) so you might ride it out for a bit (bad pun) and see how things turn out. Good luck!
