Today, my check engine light came on. Sometimes, not all the time, when it is shifting into a new gear it jerks.

Check engine light is on and the reason is that the PCM detected a malfunction or a bad sensor
best way to go about it is by scanning for codes
scan the computer for code s
that will point you in the direction of the troubled area
you can post the codes for more help

Thanks for the info. I just checked the automatic transmission fluid and it is low. Could that cause the problem? Thought I would check that out before going to get a reading on the code.

Thanks for your help. Turns out the transmission fluid was just a bit low. The code revealed that two cylinders were not firing. A new set of spark plugs solved the problem. The way it was acting I thought for sure it couldn't be that simple!
