Suspect fuel pump picked up debris and overheated due to low fuel.

Excellent advice by Doc.
Gasoline keeps the fuel pump "cool" and running it out of gas will cause it to overheat and fail.
If bad pump, keep gasoline in tank at least 1/4 full to prevent future problems.
