Engine Performance problem
1994 Honda Civic 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I was on my way back from concord New Hampsire to burlington Vermont. I had stopped at a rest stop and before I could even put the car into park just after stoping the car stalled on me. I had thought it was just overheating on me so I let it sit for about 30 mins and tried to start it again. It wouldnt start but you could hear it turn over and everything. I tired to start it again but this time I had stepped on the gas. It started right up but as soon as I took my foot of the gass to shift it from park to reverse it stalled on me again. My friend said it might have something to do with the muffler that it wasnt creating enough back pressure to start but I dont know. What could be the problem?

The muffler is not the culprit.

It sounds to me like you have a big vacuum leak, or your IACV is fully shut closed and not allowing air to bypass the valve.

When you hold the throttle down a bit, does the car run normal? Or does it sounds rough?

The muffler makes it really hard to hear if its runing rough or normally. It started up fine when the engine was cool but after it warmed up I sounded like it was starving for air. And tried to stall when I took my foot off the gas. I had to apply a little pressure to the gas when I was breaking just so that it wouldnt stall on me.

Is the check engine light on? If so retrieve any codes.

If not, check fuel pressure and for good strong spark while the engine is running rough.

You may have an ignition coil that is showing signs of failure once it warms up.
