Ok I driving home from work goin about 60 mph
i noticed buffs of smoke coming from the dashboard.
then when the engine went to shift gears the engine shut off and back fired.
i pulled over and tried starting agian
when I tried to start the car, it acted like it wanted to start but backfired.
i figured it was the engine wire harness
so I took out the dashboard and started looking at the wireharness for any burnt wires.
i havent found any yet.
i took the computer out and it smells fried.
i took the computer apart and found a burnt mark the on the board.
i got another computer but it still wont start.
when it backfires it almost like theres not enough pressure or something

Hi Brianshort8702,

For the ECM to burn off, there must be a shorting somewhere and you need to find it out or else the new ECM would fry out too.

In the meantime to check what is causing the backfire and non starting, you need to check if the sparks are good, bright and NOT orange in color. If it is weak, you need to check the ignition coil housed in the distributor.
