2001 Ford Mustang 2001 Mustang won't start

for a while now my engine has been making a knocking noise on acceleration and the service engine light has been on; the other day I couldn't get my car to start. The car cranks and turns over very well, just not catching and starting. Not sure if both problems are related, I'm just not really sure where to begin. Could it still be a bad starter even though it's cranking just fine? Fuel pump? Fuel filter? Any checks I can do to try and isolate the problem a little better? Any help is appreciated! Please help! Thanks in advance!

Since the service engine light is on do not go any further untill you have the vehicle scanned and let me know what codes show up.

From there it will probably tell you what is wrong on the vehicle that way you do not have to be guessing and checking.
