My escort has the 1.9 eng. I have noticed in the owners manual that it recomends to change the timing belt every 60,000 mi on the 1.8 eng only. It never mentions the 1.9 regaurding timing belts. Why? Will the piston make contact with the valves on either of these engines if the belt breaks? Do you recomend changing my belt for precautionary measures? Thanx.

My understanding is that the 1.9 liter engine has a more common timing chain (steel) than a rubber belt

You have a timing belt on Escort 1.9L engine
no chain on it you need to take the cover and check
