Jimmy wont start

I purchased a used 1997 Gmc Jimmy and afterwards found that the gas gauge did not work. I have ran out of gas a couple of thimes in the last year. Today the truck cut off as I was driving and I was sure there was gas in it but put more in anyway. But it still will not start just cranks. Could this be a relay switch in the glove box cause I heard one clicking over the last couple of weeks.
