I have a 1997 Chevy 1500 4wd. My truck is making a clunking sound when I first start off up through 3rd. It goes away once I get up around 40mph but comes back once I slow down to around 15mph. I've read several other posts and replies and it seems the first thing to check is the ujoint. Would that be accurate and how do I go about checking to see if there is an issue with it?

Jack a front wheel up where it is off the ground move it forward and back turning the wheel. If the universal is bad you will feel and hear it clunk. If none is found do the other wheel the same way. To check the rear axle u joint jack the rear and check both ends of the drive shaft. If you can hear it in the front right then check the front left. I don't know why but have heard where a universal that could be heard making a noise on the right was actualy on the left front.
