Car Glow Plug Question and Answer

This category contains featured questions as examples. They relate to most vehicles.

Question: 1993 Mercedes 300sd Diesel mileage: 124,000.  When I pull out the starter, the alternator light is not glowing and the glow plugs are not working.  The engine is in great condition and the starter works; my guess is that is electrical.  Can you help?

Answer:   Check the glow plugs and the control relay.

Question: 1995 Mercedes Benz 300SD mileage: 216,000. The connections on my glow plug relay seem to be fried.  Is there a way to over ride the relay allowing me to start the vehicle and then disconnect so as to not burn it out?  I just need it to work for a few more days so til I can get to the dealer to p/u a new one.

Answer:  Not a good idea to bypass the relay.  The glow plugs should be replaced with the relay.

Question: 1997 Mercedes Benz e300D mileage: 120,000. Do you know easy way to check for bad glow plug...possibly grounding and checking for a variance conductivity or resistance between the other glow plugs?

Answer: Yes, you are right about the test procedure. Also perform the test with the engine cold.
