After installing a new speedometer cable and bolting it, I over torqued the 10 mm bolt, and it snapped. The bolt broke off below the cable bracket hole (as if the cable is no longer held down by the bolt but the transmission has all the remaining threrads). Can the speedometer cable come loose on its own while the vehicle is in motion, and what happens if that happened? Is an extractor going to do the job to replace the bolt? I can hardly reach that area. What do you recommend? Thanks

Good afternoon,

Yes, the broken portion must be removed. You will need an extractor to remove the old piece.

The cable will no stay without being secured by the bolt. It will keep coming out and could damage the cable or the housing.

I will try. Extracting broken bolts and studs has never been easy for me, but I have extracted a couple among many unsuccessful attempts (not sure yet if it is experience, better extraction tool set or both.

It helps if you get a 90-degree drill to drill a pilot hole for the extractor. You can get the extractors at any parts or tool store.

I have a Hitachi drill, but it weighs a ton and can't get it stabilized. I often gravitate to using my dremel (too fast?) Or HF drill master mini (too incompetent: can't even hold its own attachments). So, maybe a right angle drill will do the trick and encourage me to practice. Roy, thanks
