I recently posted a question about a broken timing belt and whether there woiuld be engine damage if just the pulley broke and not the belt itself. I took the car to Mitsubishi dealer where the timing belt, both pullleys, and gaskets were changed as preventative maintenance at 64000 miles. 5 days ago, the bolt that holds the pulley bracket broke (flush with the engine hole), the pulleyflew off, and then the belt came off (not broken, just off). Now mitsubishi is telling me that they did not remove the bracket when they replaced the pulley so it isn't their responsibility to fix. Is it true that a timing belt, both pulleys, and all the other labor intensive work can be done without loosening or removing the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley to the bracket?

Hi
The tensioner pulley bolt that holds auto adjuster to the block does not need to be removed. You loosen the bolt on pulley and rotate away. Also the idler pulley is not remove either. The repair was done 25K miles ago?
I would not hold them at fault.

This guide will help you do the timing belt replacement look toward the bottom of the page

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Anyway, such bolts should not break and it could have been a manufacturing defect, you can argue about it.

I just had the valves replaced and now thhe timing mark on the back head will not line up. It wont to roll like the lobes of the cam aren't enabling it to stay there. What is the problem?

Not all cam would stay in the lined up position. You need to turn and hold the cam while installing the timing belt.

On June 5, 08, I had the radiator on my car replaced(new). On June 17, I'm driving at about 70 mph on the interstate when all of a sudden my car starts to slow down on its own. I start pulling over and check to make sure the car hasn't overheated. It hasn't. I attempt to crank it after about 5 minutes and the car would crank, stay on for about 15 seconds, I could feel it shake lightly and then shut off. My car is at 151,000 and I purchased it at 70,000. I am unsure if the timing belt was already replaced when I purchased the car.

Hi foxxylelee,

If the cranking is faster than normal, as if there is very little resistance, you could have a snapped timing belt.

Other than that, you need to check if the problem is electricals or fuel.

My car timing belt snapped and the mechanic suggested I get a new motor for it because fixing the belt will cost me more. Is that true?

If your belt snapped then it bent all your intake valves so it is up to you whether to put a few thousand dollars into a 18 yr old car. Either for a new engine or cylinder head repair. Get a quote first.

Side opposite tensione make belt tight from crank to cam use wrench to slightly move cam to tighten belt to indicator. Use a BIG pincer type paperclip to hold belt netx do other cam same wat wrench to get into teeth don't freak over a hafl tooth off. Then clamp it now holding slack side tight position tensioner

If your asking honestly I wouldnt do it yourself.
It has a interferce engine, if your new timing belt misses your gonna bend your valves and pistons and your engine will be junk. Save up your money for a certified mechanic to do it. Instructions dont always help for interference engines. If you screw up once its done!
Just trying to save you from complete engine sacrifice.

There is a gurgaling noise coming from the timing belt area. So I took the inspection cover off and that is were the noise is coming from. Do the two pulleys have bearings maybe that could be it ! When I bought it a month ago the guy I bought it from told me that he just replaced the timing belt.I'm starting to wonder if he really did ! Please let me know what you think ! Thank You !

You need to replace the water pump with the timing belt. Saves labor because its in the same general area. If he didnt replace it then do it now.
I am sure your timing belt is fine. Make sure it is replaced every 60k- 70k miles or your gonna be junking the engine. If it doesnt get replaced at this time pistons shred and valves bend. If its time to change again do it, If you didnt replace the water pump then it may be time.

If the old belt let go while the engine was running, then there is a very good chance that you have bent valves because this is an interference engine.
