After replacing (long block)Eng:3.8, I wish to set the timing to 10^BTDC, but can't see the timing mark on the harmonic bal. From above (too many obstructions).
Must it be viewed from below? TIA, Al.

You'll probably get a better shot at it from below. It's tough no matter how you do it.

Thanks for ya timely/prompt responce.
However, when viewing from "below" I get an grande picture of the rotating scale on the Harmontic Balancer, but the fixed referance pointer is 'out of sight'.
I can't find it even with the use of mirrows. Please consider my plight/delyma. Not a new question, but I'm wondering, how do the guys at the Ford house Service Dept. Do it?
I'll be more generious with my 'donation', if ya'll be more liberal with an more meaningful/workable reply. Solution.
TIA, Al.

The dealerships and some shops have a probe they slip into a holder by the timing marks. They can see the timing on a computer monitor. That's a luxury most of use don't have. Let me see what I can find for you. I used to have an optical tube for situations just like yours. I don't know if they even sell them anymore. I had 2 tubes (optical fiber) side by side. One for vision and one along side for the light. You may want to check into this. I think I got mine from NAPA, but I don't remember. It may have been Snap-on or Mac.
