Electrical problem
1991 Isuzu Stylus 4 cyl Automatic

My friend has a 91 isuzu that she's selling and says the engine and alternator were recently replaced. The car was originally for her brother but he's 6'4 so it's too uncomfortable for him. Anyway she offered me this car for 800. It will be my first car and having a new engine and alternator sounds good for an old car. The problem is someone stole the radio and a bunch of wires were cut out. Now at night when the headlights are turned on the headlights the car cuts off. It also cannot pass a smog test due to these issues. I'm just not sure if I should invest in this car with these wiring issues if it's going to be more expensive than buying the car. Is this a quick fix or is there a larger underlying issue with the car?

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation,

This is very much an unknown quantity, it does sound like there is a short in the cut wiring, I think you would be best served to see if you can have this looked at before you buy the car, just to get an estimate on what may be the problem, something like this will need hands on inspection to find the fault, it just may be a simple wiring issue due to the cut loom, but it may be a deeper problem, this will not be known until some diagnostic are done first.
