Where are you driving?

What Surfaces?

Are you in "High" or "Low" Range---Does that make a difference?

The Medic

Describe the noise and its origin.

What I was sorta getting at is, its not good to use 4X4 on hard (paved) surfaces, it makes the differentials bind against one another (owners manual should back me up on this)

Can you tell where the sound originates? What does it sound like? is it in time with the engine or in time with the wheels turning?

Wanna see my BAD LUCK from about an hour ago? Look at this Post (especially at the end)

I read your post. I hope you dont have to re do your tranny. That would suck to do twice. ( Or even once for me ) I agree about the jeep it is not a "car" mine may not be the best off road rig but it always gets me and the family where ever we want to go.

Have you checked your front driveshaft "U" joints?

What about the yoke going into your front diff, is it traveling "Centered" as it rotates or is there "Wobble", even the slightest)?

You might have to lift at least one wheel and be out of 4X4, to do this. Does it rotate smoothly or does it feel "Gritty"?

I'm glad my Pal came back over, we were able to test the shaft in question with a Dial-Indicator to measure the End Play of the countershaft----It was.018" (correct tolerance) If the thrust washer had been missing it would have had.080" End Play (slop)
SO, All I had to do was remove the shifter top, Drain the Gear Oil---I did refill with 80W-90 instead of 85W-140----All seems to run well nowI LIKE IT!

I came so close to snatching it all out last night, and tearing back into the tranny---I'm glad I waited!

The Medic

Heres the "INSTALLED" END PLAY TEST (I take pics of everything now!)

Well, tranny went well, for a bout 20 miles, then a 55 MPH the drive-train locked up. With my Cat-Like reflexes and coolness under fire, I was able to avoid 2 roll-overs as it swung left and right, till it stopped.

Got it home on my tow dolly, had to remove rear driveshaft for it to roll.

This time it's the Transfer Case--Ever seen a Cat-like reflex gifted--Grown man cry?

Keep me posted on your progress--Ebay may be a inexpensive way out also!

Dam sorry to hear that suddenly my $400 drive shaft dont seem so bad. I pulled it out before it broke completely and I went for a ride. Been there done that not fun when front u joint snaps and the drive shaft digs into the road at 50 mph. That was a wild ride. Oh and I junked that car.

Do you happen to know if I can put the front drive shaft from a grand cherokee with a 4.7 in mine with a 4.0? I heard it is stronger.

It may can get the crack in the "Case" brazed up by a Good Acquaintance (good friend of a good friend), said to be a Super Brazing Kinda Guy. As for the Tail Piece, I may can salvage the shaft, but the body and innards will have to be replaced, the Race spun big-time and gnarled up the cast race surface.

Let me know if you come up with something, I'll sorta search some too!
