Can hot wire the coil to make it run

Some older systems have a bypass voltage for the coil. With engine cranking, the coil gets full battery voltage, when key goes to run position, the voltage to the coil goes through a resistor. Sounds like that resistor circuit is faulty. Don't have a diagram at the moment.
